Questions worth asking before we start.
Direct answers about web development, custom software, SEO, GEO, hosting, pricing and working with a senior UK developer.
Web Design
Web Design questions, answered plainly.
Can you build an ecommerce website?
Yes. Ecommerce projects can use WooCommerce, Shopify or a custom solution depending on catalogue size, operational needs, integrations and budget. Payment, fulfilment, tax and stock workflows are considered during discovery.
Can you redesign an existing website without losing its SEO?
Yes. A redesign starts with an audit of current URLs, rankings, metadata, content and backlinks. Valuable pages are retained or redirected carefully, then technical SEO is checked before and after launch.
Do you build accessible websites?
Yes. Accessibility is considered through semantic HTML, keyboard navigation, colour contrast, form labelling, responsive layouts and testing. Formal WCAG conformance can be included when required by the project.
Do you build websites for businesses in Swindon?
Yes. Rich Harrington Ltd provides web design and development for businesses in Swindon, Wiltshire and across the UK. Projects can be delivered remotely, with local meetings available when they add value.
Do you use templates?
No. Every site is bespoke. You get a design tailored to your brand and conversion goals, not a theme with your logo swapped in. Layout, typography, and content structure are built for your business.
How long does the web design process take?
Discovery and proposal typically take 3–5 days. Build time depends on scope: a simple 5-page site is 2–3 weeks; larger projects 4–8 weeks. You get a clear timeline before work starts.
What platform do you build websites on?
Custom React and Vite for performance-critical sites, Payload CMS when you need flexible content control. WordPress when it fits — ACF, custom themes, no page builders. The stack follows your goals, not a template.
What's the process for a new website?
Discovery call, then proposal and design sign-off, build, testing, and launch. You are involved at each stage with clear checkpoints. No surprise invoices or scope creep without agreement.
Will I be able to update the website myself?
Yes. Where content editing is required, the website includes an appropriate CMS with reusable fields and sensible permissions. Training and documentation can be included at handover.
Pricing
Pricing questions, answered plainly.
Do you charge for discovery calls?
No. The first call is free. We discuss goals, timeline, and budget. If it is a good fit, you receive a written proposal with scope, price, and milestones before any work begins.
How much does a website cost?
Starter websites from £995 (up to 5 pages, mobile responsive, contact form, SEO setup). Larger builds, SaaS, and ecommerce are quoted after discovery. Fixed-price proposals — no hourly surprises unless you ask for ad-hoc work.
Hosting & Domains
Hosting & Domains questions, answered plainly.
Can you manage my domain name?
Yes. Domain registration, DNS, email routing, and renewals can be handled through Rich Harrington Ltd. You retain ownership — I manage the technical side so records stay correct.
Can you migrate a website with minimal downtime?
Yes. Migrations are planned with backups, DNS preparation, testing, rollback steps and monitoring. Where the existing platform allows it, the final cutover can usually be completed with little or no noticeable downtime.
Do you offer web hosting?
Yes. UK-friendly hosting from £3.99 per month with SSL, backups, and support. I can migrate existing sites or provision new hosting as part of a project. See the Hosting & infrastructure service page for plans.
Maintenance
Maintenance questions, answered plainly.
Do you offer ongoing support after launch?
Yes. Every project includes 7 days warranty for bug fixes. For ongoing work you can book hours from £75, take hosting from £3.99 per month, or arrange a maintenance retainer with updates and monitoring.
Do you offer support after launch?
Yes. Ongoing maintenance can include updates, security patches, monitoring, backup checks, performance work and retained development.
How quickly do you respond to support requests?
Response targets depend on the agreed support arrangement. Existing clients use the support route so requests are prioritised correctly; urgent incidents and retained support can have defined response windows.
What is included in a maintenance plan?
WordPress or app updates, security patches, uptime monitoring, backup checks, and a monthly report. Priority support response and small content changes depending on tier. See Website maintenance & support for details.
SaaS & Apps
SaaS & Apps questions, answered plainly.
Can you build custom SaaS products?
Yes. I build MVPs and production SaaS — auth, billing, admin dashboards, APIs, and integrations. React/Node and Supabase are common stacks; scope is agreed in a fixed proposal after discovery.
Can you integrate Stripe, CRMs and third-party APIs?
Yes. I build and maintain integrations with payment providers, CRMs, email platforms, content systems, identity services and specialist APIs. Reliability, authentication, retries and data ownership are planned as part of the integration.
What is included in a SaaS MVP?
A typical SaaS MVP can include product discovery, user journeys, authentication, roles, billing, a core customer workflow, administration, analytics, deployment and a prioritised roadmap. Exact scope follows the commercial risk being tested.
Who owns the code and accounts after launch?
Unless a contract states otherwise, the client owns the commissioned deliverables after agreed invoices are paid. Production accounts and domains should be held in the client’s name, with access documented at handover.
SEO & GEO
SEO & GEO questions, answered plainly.
Can you improve an existing website for AI search and answer engines?
Yes. GEO work can improve service definitions, expert attribution, FAQs, entity relationships, evidence, internal linking and schema markup while keeping the content natural for human readers.
Do your websites include technical SEO?
Yes. Core technical SEO includes crawlable page structure, metadata, canonical URLs, XML sitemap, robots directives, semantic headings, structured data, performance checks and redirect planning where relevant.
What is GEO and how is it different from SEO?
Search engine optimisation helps pages rank in traditional search results. Generative engine optimisation makes content easier for AI assistants and answer engines to understand, verify and cite through clear entities, direct answers, structured data and trustworthy evidence.
Will you guarantee first place on Google or inclusion in AI answers?
No responsible developer or SEO specialist can guarantee a specific ranking or citation. I can improve the technical foundation, clarity, evidence and discoverability that search engines and AI systems use when evaluating content.
Process
Process questions, answered plainly.
Can you take over a project from another developer?
Yes. Takeovers begin with access checks, source-code and infrastructure review, dependency assessment and a clear list of immediate risks. I will explain what is reusable before recommending a rebuild.
How will I see progress during the build?
Work is delivered through visible stages with review links, written updates and agreed decision points. The exact rhythm depends on the project, but progress should never disappear into a black box.
What do you need from me before a project starts?
The most useful inputs are the business goal, target users, known constraints, important deadlines, available content and budget range. A finished technical specification is not required before the first conversation.
Client Portal
Client Portal questions, answered plainly.
How do I log a support ticket?
Use the public support form at richharrington.dev/support or email helpme@richharrington.dev. Portal clients can open tickets from the dashboard. Typical response within one business day.
What is the client portal?
A secure login where you view projects, invoices, documents, support tickets, and hosting in one place. You get updates without digging through email threads. Portal access is included for active clients.
Security
Security questions, answered plainly.
Do you work with existing hosts?
Yes. I harden cPanel, VPS, and cloud setups on AWS, DigitalOcean, and similar providers. If your stack is unusual, we discuss it on a discovery call before quoting.
How do you protect websites and applications?
Security measures can include least-privilege access, secure authentication, dependency updates, TLS, firewall and CDN configuration, backups, monitoring, secret management and recovery testing. The controls are matched to the system’s actual risk.
Who is security hardening for?
Any business running WordPress, custom apps, or VPS infrastructure that cannot afford downtime or a breach. Typical clients are agencies, SaaS founders, and SMEs without an in-house DevOps team.
